The sun creeps through the louvred slats in the old shutters, daylight gradually pushing away the night. Outside the birds are singing, the dawn chorus swelling, voice-upon-voice adding its own tune. It’s almost impossible to ignore spring mornings here.

I push back the shutters and let the light stream in, leaning on the garde corps to watch the sun slant through the trees, to listen to the birds and to let the sweet, heady scent of the wisteria weave its way through every room in the house.

It’s tempting to stay in bed, but the morning is calling, making me pull on my boots so I can walk through the dewy grass and into the woods. Fresh air, golden sunshine, blue skies and the sound of the wind in the trees, leaves fluttering in the breeze, nothing better to wake me up and chase away the fug of nighttime.

Precious mornings that for one more week are just for us. But from next Friday they can be yours too, as we open our doors ready to share our home with you all, all-summer-#
long.

Everything changed this week, it was as if spring

The shutters were all closed up, as if her eyes were wired shut. Her face was dirty, grey streaks, like tear stains down her cheeks. She looked a little unloved, but inside there were signs of happy family times, room-after-room full of beds waiting for everyone to come back.

We got lost in her halls, overwhelmed by the space, seduced by big windows, beautiful light and tiled floors. There were still daffodils in bloom and the back meadow was full of early spring flowers - cowslips, dead nettle, pretty blue ground ivy and the trees just coming into leaf. Everything was bright and vibrant, with a big old house nestled into the middle of it.

I walked away half-in-love, half-terrified at the very idea of leaving England for an unknown house in another country. Looking back I have no idea what we were thinking?

But somehow eight years later I find myself still here, still watching those same daffodils and cowslips brighten up the garden after another long winter. The difference between that April and this one, is that she now belongs to me.

Her face is no longer tear stained but her shutters need some work, there are fewer beds in fewer rooms and a whole lot more bathrooms, though oddly I still don’t have one of my own!

We’re busily working to get the house and grounds ready to welcome our sixth proper season of guests, having arrived thinking the bed and breakfast would just be a stop-gap to something else.

I never expected to make this château my home, had no idea how much work looking after her would be, could never have imagined the adventures she would send me on, but I love her anyway, even with all the wonky bits we still need to tackle.
