The sun slowly slips around the back of the house,

The sun slowly slips around the back of the house, warming the back terrace and coaxing the petals of the roses open. There’s a cool breeze that swirls and eddies around the trees, making the leaves shimmy and stir.

I throw open the windows, letting the fresh mid-morning air sweep through the room, chasing off the fug of nighttime. The scent of roses fills the room, sweet, floral, a tiny hint of citrus with a base note of musk.

I’m supposed to be making beds, but instead I’m distracted, leaning out of the window to bury my nose in one of the roses scrambling over the cellar steps.

At this time of year the Meadow Suite is definitely my favourite room; its light, its roses and the fact that it’s just two step down to the garden. The flowers are in touching distance, roses rambling outside of every window, it’s the perfect place to be.

It’s quiet, the early summer sunlight shining dappled through the windows, birds singing outside and a gentle breeze blowing in from the garden, warm and sweetly scented with that green smell of the early summer garden - freshly cut lawns and the very first roses.

I walk through each room, checking that we’ve remembered everything, straightening pillows, smoothing bedspreads, searching out cobwebs. Making sure everything is perfect for our next guests.

I want to stay here, lingering in the clean, calm peace of our holiday cottage, Maurice’s House. I could curl up on the bed with a book and read for hours in the quiet. But that will be someone else’s job.

We’ll hand over the keys, tell them all the houses secrets and then let them settle in to make this house their home-away-from-home for the next week.

It will be ours again for just a few hours next week, when we’ll clean and tidy and then do the same again.

It’s the smiles and sometimes even the happy tears that make this job worth it, watching our guests fall in love with a house that we worked so hard to create.

It never gets old hearing about their week exploring our little bit of France, imagining them cooking meals from what they’ve bought at the market, eating around the kitchen table and hearing how much they’ve enjoyed their stay. Watching our guests fall in love with the place reminds us to keep loving it too.
